UK - Key Stage 2

  • Introduction

Key Stage 2 (KS2) is a part of the national curriculum followed in the UK. The term is used for the four years of education maintained in schools and are also normally known as Year 3, Year 4, Year 5 and Year 6.
There are exams associated with each key stage that show how a student is doing in the areas of study that have been defined as targets in the national curriculum.

Key stage 2 is a four-year programme starting from Year 3 – Year 6.

  • Which age groups and years is it for?

Key Stage 2 is designed for pupils aged from 8 to 11 years.

  • Which subjects are offered?

There are 11 mandatory subjects for students in KS2:

  • English
  • Mathematics
  • Science
  • Design Technology
  • History
  • Geography
  • Art and Design
  • Music
  • Physical Education (PE)
  • Computing
  • Ancient and Modern Foreign Languages

Other subjects include PSHE, it teaches children how to stay safe and live a healthy lifestyle. It aims to help children develop positive social skills and important attributes like empathy.
Schools must also provide Religious Education, although parents can ask that their children are taken out of part or all of the lessons.

  • What is the grading system and how are the students assessed? 

At the end of each key stage, children’s abilities are formally assessed. At the end of Year 6, students must take a set of national tests. Students are expected to reach certain levels at each key stage test.

The tests taken at the end of Key Stage 2 are:

    • English grammar, punctuation and spelling
    • English reading (reading and understanding text)
    • Mathematics (arithmetic and reasoning)
    • Science (Biology, Chemistry and Physics)
