NEET

  • Introduction

The National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) is an all India pre – medical entrance test for students who wish to pursue undergraduate medical, dental and AYUSH (BAMS, BHMS, etc.) courses in government and private institutions in India and also for those intending to pursue primary medical qualification abroad. It is conducted by the national testing agency (NTA).

  • How many years is the program?

The syllabus for NEET is based on CBSE grades 11 and 12. It is a 3-hour long entrance examination that is conducted all over India once every year. Students spend at least six to eight months preparing for the exam.

  • What age groups and years is it for?

Only students who have passed or are currently enrolled in 12th grade are eligible to apply for the exam. The student should also be a minimum 17 years of age at the end of December of the admission year.

  • Which subjects are offered?

The core subjects required to be eligible to give the exam are

  • Physics
  • Chemistry
  • Biology (Botany and Zoology)
  • What is the grading system and how are the students assessed?

There are a total of 200 multiple choice questions (MCQs) of which students have to attempt 180 questions in the exam; 45 from each of the core subjects. The exam is of 720 marks in total wherein 4 marks are given for a right answer and 1 mark is deducted for every wrong one selected. No mark will be deducted if the question is not attempted.

  • Key features and highlights of the curriculum

The syllabus consists of the 11th and 12th grade NCERT books which are the textbooks prescribed by the CBSE board of education. As the curriculum is the same as the one students would already be studying in school, with just a few changes, it doesn’t put an extra burden on the child. The exam being MCQ based is easier for the students and tests their application-based learning more efficiently rather than a traditional exam that favours memorization skills.
